July 26, 2004 - Fil-Am Educators to Speak at the World Congress in Reading

Sevilla Belen Castillo and Victoria M. Rey will speak at the International Reading Association World Congress in Reading that will be held at the Shangri-La, Mandaluyong City, Philippines on July 26-29, 2004. Educators from the Philippines and other countries will attend the congress.

Sevilla and Victoria will speak on reading-writing connection strategies for ESL learners. They have also presented related topics at the New Jersey Reading Association and New York state conferences. Some educators have invited them to give workshops to teachers in the Philippines.

Sevilla Belen Castillo is a founding member and the current president of the Alliance for Cultural and Educational Services, and a committee chair of the Philippine American Friendship Committee, Inc. She is also one and founding members and vice president of AFTA for more than a decade. She is a media specialist in a public school in Newark. She has given training to teachers and parents at Quitman Street School.

Victoria is the founding president of the Alliance for Cultural and Educational Services, Inc. (ACES) and former president of the Association of Filipino Teachers of America (AFTA). She has given presentation at several states, national and international conferences in Reading improvement and reading education. She teaches at KEAN University, New Jersey and the executive director of ACES.

Both Sevilla and Victoria are members of the education committee of the Asian Studies initiative of New Jersey Governor James McGreevey. They have also received a proclamation from the governor for their leadership and active involvement in the Filipino-American community.
